Court Bars Kaduna Varsity Unions From Strike

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has restrained three workersโ€™ unions at Kaduna State University from embarking on a strike or taking any form of industrial action pending the determination of a suit filed by the institution.

The affected unions are the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, and the National Association of Academic Technologists. Their officers and agents were also barred from declaring, commencing, directing, or participating in any strike.

Our correspondent gathered on Saturday that Justice E. D. Subilim of the Abuja Judicial Division of the court issued the restraining order on November 5, 2026.

In the order, the judge restrained the unions and persons acting on their behalf from โ€œcommencing, declaring, directing, instigating, encouraging, or participating in any strike or industrial actionโ€ pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The court also directed the unions to cease and desist from giving effect to any strike action while the case remained before it.

The suit, marked NICN/ABJ/329/2026, was instituted by Kaduna State University, its Governing Council, and the Vice-Chancellor against the three unions and some of their officials.

The defendants listed in the suit include the NASU branch chairman, Nina Ochigbo; its secretary, Dahiru Musa; SSANU chairman, Sadiya Mustapha; and its secretary, Nicholas Allen.

The court directed the claimants to ensure that the originating summons, motion on notice, supporting affidavits, and a copy of the enrolled order were served on the defendants forthwith.

It adjourned the hearing of the motion on notice to November 18, 2026.

The order, issued under the seal of the court in Abuja on November 6, 2026, was signed by Vallari Aaron Masomene, Senior Registrar II.
