Glo Leads Other Operators In Internet Subscriber Growth

Nigeria’s indigenous telecommunications company, Globacom, in May recorded significant growth in its internet subscription figures, chalking up 1.2 million subscribers out of the industry’s 2.67 million figure.

This came from the latest figures released for the month of May by the regulatory body for telecommunications, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Globacom’s subscriber base accounted for nearly half of the industry’s monthly growth.

The second-largest increase was seen by Airtel Nigeria, which increased its subscriber base by adding over 1.07 million. MTN added 382,894 in the same month. T2 Mobile, formerly known as 9mobile, reported no growth for the second straight month.

According to industry sources, Globacom’s significant performance figure in May is a result of its continuing infrastructure expansion initiative, which started last year. In order to ensure high network quality for both voice and data services across the nation, the network upgrade entails the deployment of hundreds of new base stations to cover new sites and densification to increase coverage in areas with expanding populations.

Additionally, the company is expanding its fibre optic network and moving the infrastructure in a number of areas where road development has affected network quality nationwide. In a same vein, the network has installed thousands of 4G LTE sites in strategic cities and areas nationwide just this year, greatly enhancing network connection in both urban and rural areas. The network’s subscriber experience has improved as a result of these initiatives.
