The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says its members have yet to receive their outstanding salaries despite the N1.1 billion special intervention fund granted the institution by the state government.
The union also threatened a fresh industrial action if the state government fails to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, particularly the new salary structure for university teachers.
Last Wednesday, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa approved the release of the N1.1 billion to offset the outstanding salary arrears of lecturers and other staff members of the institution.
The approval was authorised barely a week after the ASUU chapter commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the May and June salaries of its members.
Chairman of ASUU-AAUA, Bolu Oshodi, said the university’s workers are currently owed May, June and July salaries despite assurances that funds had been approved for the institution.
Oshodi said: “As we speak now, the latest information is that the government has released the money to the university, but then the university is still waiting for the money to drop into its account.
“They said the problem is with the bank, but as far as we are concerned, what our members are waiting for is the alert.”
He stated that the union would not suspend the strike based on promises, stressing that members would only return to work after receiving their salary alerts.
The chairman warned that the salary dispute was only one part of the challenges confronting the university.
“Beyond the issue of two or three months’ salary, there is a bigger issue ahead. The union is demanding the implementation of the new salary structure agreed between ASUU and the Federal Government in December 2025,” he said.
Oshodi said implementation commenced in January 2026, adding that some federal and state universities had already started benefiting from the new salary package.
The ASUU chairman also raised concerns over the monthly subvention to AAUA, saying the N223 million released in July was inadequate to meet its monthly salary obligations.
“The news we got now is that the whole subvention of N223 million was still released for July, and this has been a recurring problem. The N223 million has never been enough for salaries alone. The salary is N550 million,” Oshodi said.
According to him, the university has had to augment its monthly subvention by more than N300 million to meet its salary obligations.
“Even if the state government cannot give the full subvention for salary, which is N550 million, for now, nothing stops the state government from releasing N500 million out of N550 million,” Oshodi said.
