Organisers of the Lagos State MiniFootball League have earmarked a total prize fund of ₦4.5 million for winners of the male and female categories, as the inaugural championship kicks off on 1 August 2026.

The 6-a-side tournament will run for four weeks across three venues in Agege and Orile-Agege, featuring 30 grassroots teams — 20 male and 10 female. The male category carries a ₦3 million prize for the winners, with ₦1.5 million allocated to the female winners.

The 20 male teams have been drawn into two groups, playing nine matches each across two centres, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals. The 10 female teams will compete at a single venue. The competition has no age restrictions.

Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government and Chairman of the Lagos State MiniFootball Association, Hon. Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, disclosed the prize package ahead of Friday’s exhibition and celebrity novelty match at the newly constructed Mini Football Pitch in Keke Primary School, Agege. 

Obasa said the league would promote the  sport among young talents in the Agege community and serve as a scouting platform, with organisers planning to select a squad to represent Nigeria at the Mini Football AFCON women’s edition in Cameroon in September. He said scouting for that squad began the previous weekend.

Vice-Chairman of the Lagos Mini Football Association and a member of the sport’s national governing body, Sheriff Tajudeen, said the tournament would showcase emerging talents, educate young players on the sport’s rules, and encourage community involvement in Agege.

Tajudeen added that eleven Nigerian states are currently participating in mini football nationally, with plans for all 36 states to be involved by the end of 2026.
