Google Unveils New AI-Powered Laptop Platform, Googlebook

Google has unveiled Googlebook, a new laptop platform designed for its Gemini artificial intelligence system, marking its latest push to expand Android beyond smartphones into premium personal computing devices.

Announcing the product on its official blog, the company said Googlebook is “a new category of laptops designed for Gemini Intelligence,” combining Android’s app ecosystem with Chrome’s browser experience to create what it described as a more connected and AI-driven laptop platform.

“We’re introducing Googlebook, a new category of laptops designed for Gemini Intelligence and perfectly in sync with your Android phone,” Google said.

Built for Gemini Intelligence

Google said the new platform places Gemini at the centre of the user experience, allowing the AI assistant to provide contextual support while users work, browse or interact with applications.

One of the major features introduced is Magic Pointer, developed with Google DeepMind, which activates Gemini when users move their cursor in a specific way, enabling on-screen contextual suggestions such as creating calendar entries from emails or comparing images.

“Just wiggle your cursor and watch it come alive with Gemini, offering quick, contextual suggestions every time you point at something on your screen. Point at a date in an email to set up a meeting, or select two images — like your living room and a new couch — to instantly visualize them together. It lets you go from idea to I’m done in just a few clicks,” the post read in parts.

Android and ChromeOS combined

According to the company, Googlebook merges the best of Android, including access to apps on Google Play — with Chrome’s browser capabilities, in what appears to be a broader move to unify its computing platforms.

“We’re bringing together the best of Android, which comes with powerful apps on Google Play and a modern OS that’s designed for Intelligence, and ChromeOS, which comes with the world’s most popular browser.”

Google, however, said Chromebooks will continue to exist, suggesting that Googlebook is aimed at a different segment of the market, particularly premium users seeking AI-native devices.

Designed to work with Android phones

Google said Googlebook has been built to work closely with Android smartphones, allowing users to access apps, files and other services across devices more seamlessly.

The company added that more details, including hardware specifications and launch timelines, would be announced later this year, with manufacturers such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus and Acer expected to release devices under the new platform.

The launch is a signal of Google’s latest effort to deepen its footprint in the laptop market as competition intensifies in the race to embed artificial intelligence into consumer devices.
