NANS Engages Police Over Alleged Assault On Student In Osun

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has held a roundtable dialogue with the Nigeria Police Force in Osun State following allegations that some officers physically assaulted a student.

In a statement, the Coordinator of NANS Southwest Zone D, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, said the incident allegedly triggered a road accident that left the student, his wife and their two children injured, heightening tension and nearly sparking unrest.

Kayode disclosed that while he was in Abuja on official assignment, he directed the Assistant General Secretary, Comrade Abubakar Musefiu, to promptly intervene in the matter.

He added that upon his return, and in a bid to forestall further escalation, the student body visited the office of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, to demand clarity, accountability and justice.

“The  Commissioner of Police appreciated the mature and strategic approach adopted by the NANS Southwest leadership. He acknowledged that the situation could have degenerated if handled differently and commended the Coordinator for choosing dialogue over confrontation.

“The Commissioner further stated that he has consistently organized training programs emphasizing professionalism, humanity, and improved relationships between the Police and students. He assured the delegation that the matter would be personally handled under his supervision and that justice would be served accordingly.

“NANS Southwest therefore assures all Nigerian students that this matter is being closely monitored and followed up to ensure that fairness and justice prevail. We call on students to remain calm, law-abiding, and united as the leadership continues to engage relevant authorities in protecting the rights and security of every Nigerian student,” the statement said.

NANS reiterated its resolve to continue to defend students, adding that it prioritizes peace, due process, and constructive engagement with authorities.

The association thanked the Commissioner of Police and the Police Public Relations Officer for their receptiveness and proactive disposition.
