HarmonyOS, Huawei’s homegrown operating system, has achieved a massive milestone in the industry, adding 8 million developers to improve the software ecosystem.
The recently released 2024-2025 sustainability report confirms 8 million developers have joined the HarmonyOS camp since the launch in 2019. Over 400 Chinese universities are now offering HarmonyOS studies, and 320+ campuses have opened courses.
Huawei is making its own efforts to raise awareness and increase the number of developers through its HarmonyOS Academy, which has enrolled more than 7.32 million students.
After the US ban, Huawei developed its own operating system, HarmonyOS. The early stage of the OS was aligned with an open source Android library to support the existing app ecosystem.
To start, the Chinese tech maker used its EMUI apps to run on HarmonyOS. This move enabled Android apps on HarmonyOS devices without overwhelming developers from this OS shift.
Over the past five years, Huawei has made rapid progress with HarmonyOS, expanding its reach from mobile to tablets, TVs, PCs, smart wearables, home devices, third-party devices, smart cars, and even enterprise solutions.
The company is running the HarmonyOS show entirely in the Chinese market, but the next stage of this evolution was HarmonyOS NEXT, supporting native applications. This approach strengthens the speed and the app user experience compared to the previous version of HarmonyOS.
The company has collaborated with top Chinese industry players and developers to support the ecosystem and launch native apps to reach a diverse user base.
Huawei’s Executive Director and Chairman, Yu Chengdong, recently announced that the number of HarmonyOS devices has exceeded 25 million units, and the software is now seeing 144,000 installations per day.
