A total of 101 newly graduated medical doctors from the Benjamin Carson Senior College of Health and Medical Sciences, Babcock University, Ilisan Remo, were inducted into the medical profession by the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Fatima Kyari, represented by Tijani Ali.
No fewer than 32 of the newly graduated doctors obtained distinctions in various courses, including the 24-year-old Chisom Okafor, who finished as the best-graduating student with 10 distinctions.
Speaking after leading the new set of doctors to take the oath of allegiance to uphold the ethics of the profession at the event held at the Amphitheatre of the university, the Registrar of MDCN urged the doctors to remain focused and committed to serving humanity and shun sharp practices.
Kyari stated that they must know that indulgence in unethical practice is not allowed in the medical field, as any practitioner who flouts the ethics of the profession in any way would be duly sanctioned.
She said that although medical practice may not be all that lucrative, the practitioners are respected in society as they deal with lives and impact humanity.
The Registrar stated that “So, you must challenge yourself. You have acquired knowledge, but it is now you will put the knowledge to use in the real sense.
“I urge you to let integrity be your watchword. You must exhibit the right attitude, be diligent, and always seek a second opinion when necessary.
“Additionally, always steer clear of trouble. Respect your senior colleagues and other health workers. Everyone, including your patient, deserves respect. Your job demands empathy and kindness.
“So, ensure you are a good example to others. Be loving and caring and always maintain absolute confidentiality with your patients.
“Ensure you practice according to the dictates of the profession, which is highly regulated.”
The registrar also encouraged them that, even if at all, they would go abroad for further studies, they should ensure they return home and contribute to the development of the medical profession.
She said Nigeria is badly in need of people who can add significant value and move it forward appreciably across all fields of endeavour.
While commending the university for parading high-class human and material resources in the health and medical fields, Kyari said that the council would not in any way compromise standards in its regulatory role and therefore urged the university never to rest on its laurels.
Speaking earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Ademola Tayo, represented by the Deputy VC (Academic), Philemon Amanze, said all the graduands had been thoroughly trained with the requisite knowledge and skills and good character that would help them to succeed in their chosen fields, even as they go ahead to make the world a better place for all.
