Two Die, Six Injured As Auchi Polytechnic SUG Election Turns Violent

Two students of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, have been reportedly killed and six others injured when thugs invaded venue of the Student Union Government (SUG) election and carted away ballot boxes.

The incident happened at the weekend.

A viral video released on Sunday showed student scampering for safety while police fired teargas amidst shooting by the suspected thugs.

What caused the alleged deaths was not immediately known but sources said many of the students were stabbed.

A student who pleaded anonymity said the election was going on smoothly until it was disrupted.

According to him, “There were two notable candidates, one is known as Verify while the other is called Voice, who is a native of Akpekpe in Auchi.

“Voice was counting on the fact that he is from and thought that he will enjoy the support of the notable people in Auchi to emerge victorious. However, the students stood behind and voted for Verify massively.

“Midway into the election, the agents of Voice found out that their candidate will not win. They raised an alarm and the local boys stormed the area, snatched the ballot boxes and dispersed the students by shooting into the air and using tear gas.

“This is a bad development for our school and I hope it will not snowball into something more brutal.

Edo Police spokesman, Moses Yamu said he has not received any report of such incident.

The institution is yet to appoint a spokesman since the death of its last spokesman in 2022.
