Hundreds of pupils in primary, secondary schools across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are to compete for slots to represent Nigeria at the World Robot Olympiad scheduled to hold in Singapore in November.
The World Robot Olympiad is a global robotics competition dedicated to Computer Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics education.
This was contained in a statement by the Arc-Lights Foundation, the organiser of the WRO in Nigeria, on Thursday, announcing the opening of registration for the 2025 edition of the robotics competition.
According to the Chief Executive Officer, Arc-Lights Foundation, Abisola Obasanya, the Nigerian contest scheduled for July 1, 2025, will see 1,000 participants from primary, secondary schools and tertiary institutions develop problem-solving, engineering, and programming skills.
It stated that participants would take on the challenge of designing and programming self-driving cars using open-source hardware, equipping them with critical skills for the future of robotics and automation.
The statement read, “Winners from the WRO National Competition will have the opportunity to represent Nigeria on the global stage at the WRO International Final in Singapore in November 2025, where they will compete against the brightest young innovators from around the world. Registration is now open.
The WRO Nigeria will seen competition across four categories of age groups: RoboMission, RoboSports, Future Innovators, and Future Engineers.
The statement held that top performers will get scholarships and an all-expense-paid trip to Singapore.
It further read, “One of the highlights of this year’s edition is the Future Engineers category, which is open to senior secondary school and tertiary institution students aged 14-22.
“To encourage participation and reward excellence, Arc-Lights Foundation has announced a fully funded scholarship for six students in this category.
“The top three teams, comprising two participants each, will receive financial support for their education, reinforcing the foundation’s commitment to empowering the next generation of Nigerian engineers. In addition, Camden Education Trust has provided sponsorship for an all-expense-paid trip for the overall winner of the Future Innovators category.
“This ensures that the best young minds in Nigeria gain global exposure and networking opportunities at the WRO International Final, further enhancing their career prospects and innovation potential.”
Speaking on the contest, the CEO of Arc-Lights Foundation, emphasised the importance of early exposure to robotics and STEM education:
“This competition is a stepping stone for young innovators to develop technical skills, gain global recognition, and access life-changing opportunities. We encourage schools, teams, and individuals to register and be part of this journey,” Obasanjo said.
