Enugu Varsity Leads In Quality Education, Unveils Solar Energy Centre

Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu, has cemented its place as Nigeria’s top-ranked university in quality teaching, according to the Times Higher Education ranking.

The university, recognized for its exceptional staff-student ratio, was also named one of the top five private universities in Nigeria and among the top 200 universities in Africa.

Speaking at a press briefing following the two-day International Conference on Solar Energy, Vice-Chancellor Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke attributed the recognition to the institution’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, discipline, and holistic education.

“We are a university that prioritizes hard work and accountability. No student with less than 75% class attendance will be allowed to sit for exams. Our focus is to position GOUNI on the global stage,” Prof. Anieke stated.

Pioneering Solar Energy Innovation

As part of its drive toward technological advancement, GOUNI has announced plans to establish a Solar Energy Centre, aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and making solar energy more accessible and affordable across Nigeria and Africa.

The Vice-Chancellor, who described the initiative as a game-changer, emphasized that the conference, themed “Solar Energy Revolution in Nigeria and Africa,” was organized to sensitize Africans on the untapped potential of solar power and explore cost-effective ways to expand its adoption.

Medical Students Excel as Teaching Hospital Expands

In the medical field, GOUNI’s progress is equally remarkable. The Vice-Chancellor revealed that medical students will commence their Second MBBS exams on March 10, after which they will transition to clinical training at the Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital, Enugu.

He commended the students for recording an impressive 90% pass rate in their First MBBS exams, noting that the institution had invested heavily in hostels, lecture halls, and state-of-the-art medical facilities to enhance clinical training.

Furthermore, he stated that seven medical students are currently on scholarships, while an additional 50 students across different faculties benefit from scholarship programs funded by philanthropists and organizations.

Bridging the Global Skills Gap

In line with its commitment to producing globally competitive graduates, GOUNI organized a Computer Competency Seminar for final-year students. The event was declared open by Prof. Sergius Udeh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), who emphasized the need for students to embrace technology and innovation.

The university’s Director of ICT, Mr. Chinedu Chibuzo, while delivering a paper titled “Global Relevant skills for Graduates in Our AI World,” urged students to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their professional development and warned against academic malpractice, stressing that only ethical and skilled professionals can thrive in today’s economy.

15th Inaugural Lecture: The Fight Against Xenophobia and Afrophobia

GOUNI also hosted its 15th Inaugural Lecture, delivered by Rev. Fr. Prof. DDr Chigozie Nnebedum, a faculty member in GOUNI’s Department of Sociology-Psychology.

Titled “We Are All Foreigners: Addressing Xenophobic and Afrophobia Sentiments from the Perspective of Migration,” the lecture examined the socio-economic and political factors driving migration, emphasizing the need for education, inclusion, anti-discrimination laws, and economic equality to combat xenophobia and Afrophobia.

“The idea that ‘we are all foreigners’ underscores the universality of human experience. We must embrace diversity and work toward an equitable global society,” Prof. Nnebedum asserted.

The event was graced by Emeritus Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Okonkwo Gbuji, as well as top government officials, clergy, academics, and university administrators.

GOUNI’s Vision for the Future

In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Rev. Fr. Prof. Anieke reaffirmed that all GOUNI professors must deliver an inaugural lecture within a year of their appointment, as part of the university’s emphasis on continuous academic research and intellectual engagement.

As GOUNI continues to break new ground in education, technology, and global research, the institution remains steadfast in its vision to become one of the leading universities in Africa and beyond
