Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has abolished Parents Teachers Association fees for parents and guardians of students attending public primary and secondary schools across the state.
The governor emphasised that the state government would now fully cover the costs previously borne by parents under the PTA.
Governor Bago issued the directive on Thursday during an official visit to Sarkin Pawa in Munya Local Government Area, as part of his inspection of ongoing regional development projects.
He warned school authorities to adhere to this directive, stressing that any institution found collecting PTA fees from students would face appropriate sanctions.
“This government has taken over the responsibility of PTA fees for all children in public schools in the state.
“Parents and guardians are no longer required to pay PTA fees for their children or wards.
“Headmasters and principals of public schools must cease collecting PTA fees from any student. My government will take action against anyone found in violation of this order.”
In his remarks, the governor also urged parents to enrol their children, particularly the girl-child, in school.
He stressed that the lack of a school uniform should not be a barrier to education, advising that children could attend school in their clothing if necessary.
“Allow your children to go to school. School uniforms should not prevent any child from receiving an education. If any teacher sends your child home for not wearing a uniform, please report them. I will ensure they are dismissed,” Bago warned.
Additionally, Governor Bago pledged to construct a road linking Sarkin Pawa to Kaduna State, build a modern market, and provide access to clean drinking water for the area.
He expressed satisfaction with the progress of the ongoing road project and urged the contractor to ensure its timely completion.
The Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Barrister Moses Magaji, and his counterpart, Peter Sankara, praised Bago’s achievements over his first year in office, calling his projects people-centred and impactful.
The Chairman of Munya Local Government Area, Aminu Najumi, expressed gratitude for the governor’s visit, highlighting the relative peace in the area, supported by an increased presence of security personnel to ensure the safety of lives and property.
