Institute Gets Licence To Award Degree In Psycho-Spiritual Studies

The Psycho-Spiritual Institute (PSI) has been given licence by the National Universities Commission to award postgraduate diploma in Psycho-Spiritual Trauma Healing and Master’s degree in Psycho-Spiritual Therapy.

The institute, owned by Lux Terra Leadership Foundation, has been affiliated to Veritas University, Abuja, for the programmes.

Executive Director of the foundation, Prof George Ehusani said: “The establishment of this campus is necessary, given mental health needs in Nigeria. We’re committed to providing training that combines modern psychology with spiritual and cultural perspectives.”

Ehusani noted that the development is timely, considering Nigeria’s rising mental health concerns, including depression, psycho-trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorders fuelled by political instability, economic hardship, and social upheaval.

“The training dynamics at PSI will place premium on wholesome personality growth and integration, and transformation of trainee therapists themselves in such a manner that upon graduation, they can function as ‘healed healers,” Ehusani said.

According to him, the programmes cater to professionals and volunteers interacting with traumatised individuals, offering a hybrid online and residential format.

He said upon graduation, students will provide integrated therapy support, facilitating healing and growth in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, schools, and communities.

Ehusani said the Kenyan Campus has produced nine sets of MA in Psycho-Spiritual Therapy since 2013.

He informed that the Nigeria campus has enrolled its first students, with 13 pursuing Master’s, and 30 postgraduate diploma.

“This is a step forward in addressing Nigeria’s mental health gaps. The integration of psycho-spiritual approaches will provide more effective solutions for our challenges,” Andrew Zamani, former president of Nigerian Psychological Association, said.
