Lagos Mulls Greater Cyber Safety Awareness In Schools

Lagos State Government, through Lagos Safety Commission (LSSC), has held a one-day seminar for schools across the state with the theme; ‘Building strong cyber safety awareness’.

Director General of the agency, Mr Lanre Mojola, said internet offered boundless opportunities to learn, connect and grow, emphasising that it also came with risks.

“Youths in particular are increasingly vulnerable to the dangers lurking online. Cyber bullying, phishing scams, identity theft, exposure to inappropriate content and online predators are just a few of the challenges students encounter in cyberspace. Sadly, many students are unaware of the risks and become victims of these threats,” he added.

Mojola said the state government remained committed to eradicating cyber-attacks, hence the safety awareness seminars in schools.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr Sesan Ogundeko, said the state government would want children to know the need to access the internet and the implications of knowing ‘’what is good and what is bad for them, hence the need to inculcate a seminar of this nature in their minds as being witnessed today.”

Dr Bisi Esuruoso, the lead resources, Safe Schools, Lagos, says seminar such as this is timely, as it highlights the benefits students will derive from it to tackle cyber threats, thereby fostering a safer digital environment for everyone involved.
