101 Glasses for Children With Albinism

Executive Director of Restore Foundation for Child Sight, Dr Halima Alimi, has donated 101 photochromic glasses to children with albinism to improve their vision and performance in education.

Restore Foundation is an NGO that undertakes action and advocacy for improving eye health in children.

The glasses were distributed at Rotary Pavilion, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbogbi, Lagos.

Alimi said the foundation gave out 1,935 bottles of eye drops free, trained 707 teachers, did 76 eye surgeries at subsidised amounts, and distributed over 300 glasses.

“This is being channelled towards lessening the effect of albinism in the children.

Alimi said the foundation also visited riverine areas, such as Makoko, where 2,000 children were seen in five days.

“We hope to visit orphanages and the deaf mute children, so, wherever we find disadvantaged communities and disadvantaged children, we will reach out to them,” Alimi said.

General Manager of Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), Mr Dare Dairo, said it was encouraging there were organisations filling in the gaps for social inclusion.

Chairperson and Convener of Lagos Albinism Awareness Society, Mrs Josephine Omolola, said she was elated because this was the first.

Omolola appealed to the government to support foundations caring for children with albinism.
