36 Students Win Scholarships At National Mathematics Competition

Thirty-six outstanding students have emerged as top winners at the 23rd Annual National Mathematics Competition, earning scholarships and prizes in recognition of their exceptional performance.

The awards were presented on Tuesday at the ceremony hosted by Nigerian Tulip International Colleges in collaboration with the National Mathematical Centre.

Addressing participants, parents and teachers at the event, the Managing Director of NTIC, Fevzullah Bilgin, said the 36 awardees represent the very best selected from a highly competitive national pool.

“Today, we will celebrate 36 outstanding students—19 from the primary and junior categories receiving full scholarships, and 17 students will be awarded 100 per cent tuition scholarships,” he said.

According to him, the awards cover the beneficiaries’ entire secondary education across NTIC branches, alongside additional incentives, including cash prizes based on performance.

Bilgin, however, emphasised that the recognition goes beyond the winners alone, noting that all participants demonstrated excellence throughout the competition.

“Regardless of today’s outcomes, each one of you is already a champion. Your commitment, resilience, and passion for mathematics are truly commendable,” he stated.

He explained that the emergence of the 36 students followed a rigorous selection process involving over 10,000 participants nationwide.

“From a highly competitive pool of over 10,000 participants, only 83 pupils in the primary category and 16 students in the junior category advanced to the second round. This alone is a remarkable accomplishment,” Bilgin said.

The NTIC MD further highlighted the institution’s commitment to supporting education through its scholarship scheme, revealing that about 100 students currently benefit from the NTIC-ANMC programme.

“This represents an investment exceeding one billion Naira annually—an intentional contribution toward strengthening education, human capital development, and nation-building,” he added.

He noted that beneficiaries are exposed to advanced academic programmes, including Olympiad training and global learning opportunities designed to position them for admission into top universities worldwide.

In the Junior School category, the top three medalists were Mosebiuyeyi Adedeji from Phidel College, Lagos, who came third; Onwubiko Chimdiebube from Evergreen College, Enugu, in second place; and Samuel Famiroju from Spring of Life, Fountain of Life School, Enugu, who claimed first place.

In the Primary School category, Diamond Special School, Imo dominated the awards, with Egejurum Onyedikachi taking first place, Otitoh Chigozirim coming second, and Agwuocha Ronald-Leo securing third place.

The competition was held across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Originally designed for Primary 5 and 6 pupils transitioning into JSS1, the competition was expanded in 2022 to include a junior category for students in JSS1 to JSS3, allowing more participants to benefit from the scholarship programme.
