5 Opening Match
The official opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup took place on Thursday, June 11, 2026. Host nation Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in front of a massive crowd at the historic Mexico City Stadium (Estadio Azteca), marking the start of the 104-game tournament.
6 Elimination
Haiti and Türkiye were the first teams to be eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, both exiting the group stage following their second consecutive losses on June 20, 2026.
7 Yellow Card
Argentina defender Lisandro Martínez received the first yellow card of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on July 19, 2026, after bringing down Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal in the 40th minute.
8 Red Cards
The opening match between South Africa and Mexico: South Africa’s Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane were both sent off, marking the first time any team received two red cards in a World Cup match since the infamous 2006 “Battle of Nuremberg”. French forward Kylian Mbappé was the highest goal scorer of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, winning the Golden Boot with a total of 10 goals. The feat made him the first player to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot at two different tournaments after previously finishing as the top scorer at Qatar 2022. For the first time in history, the men’s tournament expanded from 32 to 48 teams. This increased the total number of matches to 104. The teams were divided into 12 groups of four. The top two teams in each group, alongside the eight best third-placed teams, advanced to the knockout stages. The iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City hosted the opening match, while the final was held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
