Every December, it is a sort of ‘Homecoming’ for many Nigerians living in the Diaspora. The period provides a unique opportunity to mingle with friends and families. Various hot parties take place, unfolding in a whirlwind of concerts, street carnivals, festivals, weddings, art shows, dress-ups, meet-ups and travel.
But Detty December is no longer just about parties and shows, it has become a culture and lifestyle. It’s a pivotal of the creative economy in Nigeria, especially in Lagos State. It propels the hospitality, tourism, art and events industries.
A major driver of this growth is tourism. An estimated 1.2 million visitors flocked to Lagos in December 2024. Nearly 90% of these were diaspora Nigerians.
Major events headlined by local and international music stars now becomes the hallmark of Detty December.
It’s “Africa’s real summer”, Deola Art Alade’s husband Darey told AFP, and there’s evidence its popularity is expanding internationally beyond the traditional diaspora.
“People are coming to see their families, they’re bringing their friends,” Darey said, describing a “Dirty December fever”.
“This year, we have a lot of Americans living in America, you know, Black Americans now looking at coming out here and paying for packages, just to have a different kind of experience,” Iyadunni Gbadebo, sales director for Eko Hotels & Suites, told AFP.
