The Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Owo, has been shut down following a clash between officers of the Nigerian Police Force in the area and its students.

The clash was reported an unresolved hit-and-run incident supposedly perpetrated by a police officer on one of its student.

It was reported that the victim, a student of Mass Communication, was knocked down alongside a commercial motorcyclist by a drunken policeman and was left unattended to.

This led to a violent protest by the students at the Police station in the area which resulted in a full blown crisis as the officers on duty allegedly fired tear-gas at the protesters. Several students were injured in the commotion that followed but no life was lost.
