Meet Nigerians hilarious comedians who became popular through Social Media

These days, countless Nigerians are showing off their talents, skills, abilities and businesses on social media, especially Instagram. In this edition my focus is on comedy. And I will introduce you to the three of the gifted comedians who have stormed the social media with the craft and are gradually becoming household names.

These gifted humour merchants includes Woli Arole, Frank Donga and Kenny Blaq.

Woli Arole

Bayegun Oluwatoyin, popularly known as Woli Arole, is one of Nigeria’s finest comedians and actor who stormed the social media space in 2016 with his hilarious comedy skits. His choice of comedy however, is what sets him apart from his contemporaries; Woli Arole connects and touches lives with his comedy which is usually in prophetic prayers.

The Psychology graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife who is keen on taking his brand global started as a comedian about six years ago way back in his university days where he held a hit comedy show at the Amphitheatre of the university that made him popular within and outside the OAU campus, before he launched the Woli Arole brand last year.

Winning the second edition of Alibaba’s Spontaneity Competition showcased him to the outside world which he brilliantly leveraged on to further promote the Woli Arole brand.

For Woli Arole, being a comedian is a calling and a ministry, that is why he infuses his prophetic calling into his gift as a comedian; no wonder he doesn’t just say jokes to make people laugh but also to preach unity, good life and different messages that cut across all religion.

He’s presently one of the most sought after comedians across churches, social and corporate circles as several organizations contracts him to endorse their brands through his hilarious prophetic comedy skits.

Browse through his Instagram page and you’ll see videos of him and Asiricomedy (another amazing Instagram comedian) preaching the ‘gospel’ in ways reminiscent of local prophets.

Sometimes, he also gets celebrities in on the act.

Woli Arole who hopes to keep sharing fun and happiness with people now gets several invitations to come perform abroad. He’s currently working on a TV series ‘Taken’ which is targeted at treating several issues connected to the menace of divorce which is gradually hitting deep into so many homes and marriages cross the world.

Frank Donga

Kunle Idowu popularly known as Frank Donga who started off with online comedy video is definitely taking his craft far and wide. This can be attested to by his role in the gross earning The Wedding Party and Mentally by James Abinibi.

Frank has interest in putting smiles on people’s faces and he’s so passionate about reaching out to young people in Nigeria through the instrument of comedy. No wonder he took to social media comedy as the strategy to passing his message across.

Frank Donga with a Master’s degree in Animal Science from Olabisi Olabanjo University launched his online comedy movement through ‘The Interview’ which announced him to the world; the interview adventure depicts a young graduate who goes about looking for a means of livelihood after graduation.

The short videos titled ‘The Interview’ witnessed how the character Frank Donga messes up each opportunity to get a job. Any young graduate looking to get a job will most likely watch it and get truly ready for the interview panel before appearing before them.

Within two years of his journey into the social media space, Frank Donga has a number of short hilarious comedy videos amongst which are; ‘The Interview Series’ such as, ‘Salary’, ‘False Alert’, ‘The Package’, ‘Vacancy’, ‘Pure Mas’, ‘Digging Deep’, ‘Sign Up’, ‘Frankly Speaking’ and ‘Abroad Hustle’ just to mention.

Frank who was nominated in 2015 for the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards has graced many A-list events stages and is bent on preaching the right message to young people across Nigeria through comedy as he’s getting so much attention from producers through several movie scripts.

Budding stand-up musical comedian, Otolorin Peter Kehinde, known as Kenny Blaq is beginning to stamp his feet on the entertainment industry as a genuine commodity. The Lagos-bred multi-talented comedian has created a niche for himself by uniquely re-branding the fusion of music and comedy, following the footstep of the likes of Julius Agwu and Klint da drunk.

He started off in 2008 as an amateur with the Miss Ejigbo beauty pageant rally where he sang in Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa during the rally. In 2011, he officially launched his career and brand of comedy at the Calabar Festival.

He’s skillful and artistic as he laced music and comedy together to form a brand that is unique. The 2011 edition of the Calabar Festival which was held at the stadium filled with crowd to the brim served as his kicked off point when he performed to the delight of the audience. The video of his performance went viral online and people began to search for him, and that got him into spotlight and another invitation for the 2012 edition of the festival.

Kenny Blaq whose eyes are on the throne is gradually getting the right attention in the entertainment industry. He has graced countless numbers of comedy events and has worked with some big names in the industry.
