Federal University Gashua Appoints Prof. Andrew Haruna VC, DVCs

The Federal University, Gashua Yobe State, has appointed Prof. Andrew Haruna as the new Vice Chancellor of the Federal institution. The Senate has also approved the appointment of Prof. Johnson Sunday Alao, as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Services) and Prof. Maimuna Waziri, as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration).

According to a statement by the University’s Head of Information and Protocol Adamu Saleh, at the 5th Senate Meeting, said the appointment of the VC and the DVs is necessary for the progress and development of the institution in order for it to compete with other world class institutions.

Prof. Andrew Haruna, was born on 4th April, 1957 in Gar Alkaleri local government Area of Bauchi state. He had his primary and secondary schools at Bauchi and Borno states, respectively. After which he proceeded to University of Maiduguri for his degree where he graduated with B.A. (Hons.), Linguistic in 1981.

He started his academic career as Graduate Assistant at the University of Maiduguri in 1982 and rose to the rank of Assistant Lecturer between 1984 -1986, Lecturer II, 1990 -1994 Lecturer I and became a Senior Lecturer in 1994. He became an Associate Professor in 1998.

He obtained his MA and Ph.D degrees in 1985 and 1990 respectively from the University of London, and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages on 1st October 2006.

He joined University of Jos in 2013, where he worked and served as the Head of Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages before he was appointed as the Vice Chancellor Federal University, Gashua in 2016.

At the 5th senate meeting held recently where their appointments were confirmed in a statement by the University’s Head of Information and ProtocolAdamu Saleh, said

Professor J.S.  Alao born 25th November, 1956, was until his appointment the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University and started his academic career as a part time lecturer at Federal College of Forestry Ibadan, Oyo state in 1999.

He later took up an appointment with the Kogi State University, Anyigba as Lecturer II in the year 2002. In 2006 he moved to Nasarawa State University, Keffi as a Senior Lecturer.

He was later elevated to the rank of Associate Professor at the Nasarawa State University in 2009, before moving to the Federal University, Dutsin-ma in Katsina State where he became a professor of Forest Policy and Economics in 2012.

The Kogi State born Prof. Alao graduated from University of Ibadan where he bagged B.Sc Forest Resources Management (Forestry) in 1981 joined the service of Federal University, Gashua Yobe State on 2nd March 2015.

Prof. Maimuna Waziri born in 1966 at Gashua town in Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State, and she started her academic career at University of Maiduguri as a Graduate Assistant in 1987 shortly after her graduation from Bayero University Kano, where she bagged B.Sc in Chemistry in 1986.

Thereafter, she proceeded to University of Ibadan for her M.sc in Physical Chemistry in 1990, and obtained a PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry from University of Maiduguri, in 2006 and rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer.

Maimuna is dedicated to learning, research and teaching and has served in various capacities at the University of Maiduguri and Yobe State University, Damaturu  where she become an Associate Professor in 2012 and later moved to the Federal University, Gashua where she got promoted to the rank of Professor with effect from 1st October, 2015.

Prof. Haruna, who commended the outgoing Vice Chancellor Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, for laying a solid foundation, promised to build on the legacies left behind by his predecessor. He has also charged everyone to see the building of a strong institution as a collective responsibility that should be taken by all.
