Aston Villa Relegated After Defeat at United, Newcastle, Sunderland Win Big

Aston Villa have been relegated to the second-tier of English football after going down 1-0 at Manchester United.

Teenage sensation Marcus Rashford scored the only goal, cleverly blasting home Antonio Valencia’s cut-back through the legs of Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Rashford’s seventh strike in 12 games this season condemned Villa to a ninth straight loss and 15 points from safety with only four matches left, while Louis Van Gaal’s side move to within a point of fourth-placed Manchester City who play later at Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United claimed a first win under Rafa Benitez with an impressive 3-0 victory over Swansea City at St James’ Park to bolster their chances of survival.

Jamaal Lascelles headed in from a corner to put Newcastle in front just before half-time, before goals from Moussa Sissoko and Andros Townsend secured three points for the Magpies who need a further three points to guarantee safety.

Meanwhile, Saido Berahino missed two second-half penalties as Watford hung on for a 1-0 win against West Brom at The Hawthorns. Ben Watson got the FA Cup semi-finalists’ winner, volleying home a near-post corner in the first half.

Heurelho Gomes guessed correctly to save both penalties from Berahino in the 67th and 87th minutes to move his side above West Brom into 12th on 41 points.

Earlier, Sunderland climbed to within a point of safety by beating relegation rivals Norwich 3-0 at Carrow Road.

Fabio Borini buried a penalty following Andre Wisdom’s rash challenge in the box to give Sam Allardyce’s side the lead before half-time, before turning provider for Jermain Defoe to turn in a second after the break with Duncan Watmore wrapping up the scoring in injury time.
